Don’t Let Summer Slip Away! 16 fun things to do during the last weeks of summer

I was talking to my son Jordan a few days ago.  Typical mother-and-son conversation that’s more about staying connected than any one subject.

I casually asked when Greyson (my 9-year-old grandson) was going back to school.   Jordan replied, August 12th.

“WHAT!!!???” I exclaimed, genuinely surprised.

August 12th??

How is this possible?  It seemed like only yesterday; I was asking Greyson “summer questions.”  What is he looking forward to?  His swimming lessons.  What kind of art projects is he doing with his mom?  Any trips?  What about sleepovers?

But that conversation got me thinking about my summer.  It’s still crazy hot here, of course, but summer, as we know, is almost over.  It’s not all about the hot weather.  For instance, Beth in Michigan has never really put her sweatshirts away.

No, Summer is more than the weather.  It’s the unique blend of joy and freedom the summer season brings us.  This time of year is so associated with backyard barbecues, beaches, and pool parties.  It’s a season that encourages us to unwind, connect with friends and loved ones, stay up later than usual, and savor the simple pleasures of life.

At this writing, we’re more than halfway through the summer days.  Whether you’re looking to create lasting memories with family and friends or simply want to make the most of summer, there’s no shortage of activities to enjoy.

So, before the sun goes down on Summer, 2024 here’s a list of adventures and experiences to help you maximize your summer fun before the season slips away.

And of course, this list is simply to get you started.  Personalize it.  Think about what brings a smile to your face and a lightness to your step and add it to your summer list.

Don’t Let Summer Slip Away: 16 Fun Things to Do Now!

Take a walk around your neighborhood with someone you love at midnight

Have ice cream or snow cones for dinner

Sleep outdoors

Gorge on seasonal produce: ripe stone fruits, fresh corn on the cob, vine-ripened tomatoes

Take day trips: especially to towns hosting summer festivals, farmer’s markets, fireworks, or evening jazz sets in the park.  Tip:  do a computer search near your home state for a more practical list.

When was the last time you went to a drive-in theater?  Make this part of your summer fun.  Don’t forget the bug spray!

How about getting together with some of your favorite girl pals and planning a day of fun or a summer sleepover?

Plan to go to your reunions – family, school, or social clubs

Seek out new places in your city to explore.  How about a guided tour or a museum you’ve not visited?

How about a challenge?  Like urban hiking or learning a water sport like kayaking or paddle boarding.  Or whatever feels challenging to you.  But whatever you decide, be careful! I feel like I just channeled my mother! I can’t help it!

There’s still time for a getaway.  How about visiting a city where hot days and cool nights are predictable?

Have a “do nothing” day.  Get up late.  Have breakfast, lunch and dinner on the patio or by the pool.  Take a mid-afternoon nap and go to bed early.

If this feels good, plan (or finish) a project.  Paint the bookshelves, find the new living room space rug, preserve summer produce, or follow Beth’s lead and clear out the “clutter room.”

Have you privately wanted a change in personal appearance?  Let this be your season! Don’t think it – do it girl!

It’s not too late to start your herb garden

And finally, would a TwoWomen list be complete without a nod to thrifting?  Summer is the perfect time to travel to small cities known for their antique and collectible shops, or you might be lucky to find full neighborhood or church garage sales.  Enjoy!

Whatever you decide to do this summer do it with joy.

And don’t forget the sunscreen! 🍉🍓❤️🍇🍑
