Osteoporosis: The information you’ve been waiting for

It was a beautiful spring day in Austin. I deliberately parked my car a few blocks from the hospital parking garage, so I could take a short walk in the sunshine.

I was on my way for a bone density test and then on to a lunch date.

The test was quick and painless. I left the hospital maze and walked back to the garage never giving another thought to the simple test.

Three days later the doctor’s nurse called with what I’d say was shocking information. I didn’t have Osteopenia – the condition where there’s still hope. I had Osteoporosis – the condition that keeps us obsessed with bone-building/bone breaking.

And I’m sad to say Beth was diagnosed earlier this year. Yes, the two women of TwoWomen both have Osteoporosis. Along with over 3 million other cases diagnosed every year in

the US.

So, the question is what do we do now?

Well, my diagnosis is almost five years old. True to my nature, I’ve studied, read every book and article I could consume. When the diagnosis was fresh, I rejected medication and opted instead for a regimen of increased exercise, vitamins, and diet.

Three years after the first scan, I was back on the table with my legs spread apart by a black, rubber-covered triangular-shaped disk. My second scan was a little better than the first, but not great. This time after talking with my doctor for over an hour, I agreed to the medication. I’ve been taking the daily pill for about five or six months.

But honestly, I’m still conflicted and back to the research. I know the medication will give me a better bone density test. But will it give me healthier bone? And I understand a sobering truth that once on the medication you might be on it for life.

And then there’s Beth. Because of extenuating circumstances, she can’t take medication for the disease.

But all is not lost. I have found a gem of a podcast that gives me more practical information than I’ve gotten from any other source. I’m excited to share with you.
