Is walking the new running?
When it comes to the benefits of walking, it seems as if every fitness expert agrees. Just by committing to a mere 30 minutes a day, the rewards of creating this habit are pretty awesome.
Strap on your shoes and you’re promised:
Improved Cardiovascular Health – Walking is a low-impact exercise that can improve cardiovascular health. Just think, with regular walking we can lower our blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease, and have a positive impact on our overall health.
Start wherever you are. Love this about walking. Slip into a pair of walking shoes or a pair of
supportive sandals and simply go outside. Start your walking program wherever your fitness level lets you. Keep at it and one day you’ll walk outside head held high, shoulders back, and confidently get those steps, while making a powerful impact on your health. And you did it (and continue to do it) without expensive equipment, or a gym membership.
Enjoy stronger bones and joints. Walking is a weight-bearing exercise that can help build stronger bones and joints. It can also help reduce the risk of osteoporosis and arthritis. Personal note: I’m living witness to this wonderful outcome. Several years ago, I was sadly diagnosed with full-blown osteoporosis in my lumbar spine. After hearing the diagnosis, I did a little research and learned that by simply walking I may be able to make a difference in the diagnosis. I already have a regular walking routine, but with the diagnosis I added additional daily steps, increased my calcium supplements, watched my diet a little closer, made certain I took vitamin D on a regular basis, added a routine of 10 minutes daily, devoted to strength training. I supplemented all of this increased self-care by taking an
osteoporosis drug for 6 months.
I’m happy to announce, with my latest bone density exam I was told my osteoporosis has been downgraded to osteopenia (reduced bone mass of lesser severity than osteoporosis.) I was told by my doctor to continue doing what I’m doing, and she also terminated my prescription drug. Victory!
Better Sleep. Reduced Stress. Walking, like other regular exercises, can improve the quality of your sleep. Walking promotes relaxation which can lead to a restful night sleep. Similarly, walking is a great way to reduce stress and tension in our bodies. By reducing levels of stress hormones, we are able to be in a more relaxed state.
But wait, there’s more!
As many benefits as there are that most of us are aware of, there’s more that are not as discussed. If you’re not completely sold on the benefits of a walking routine, here’s a few more features that might just be all you need for you to find those sports leggings and get outside.
Improved Mood: I don’t know about you, but when something as simple as walking has the ability to change my mood, I listen. According to WebMD, walking helps boost your mood because it increases blood flow and blood circulation to the brain and body. Other sources add walking is a great way to boost your mood and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. Further, any form of exercise releases endorphins, which are a natural mood-booster. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that you’re outside getting some fresh air and sunlight.
Increased Creativity: It is amazing how a simple walk can stimulate creativity and generate new ideas. Often times when I walk out the door, I’ll set my intention for the walk. If it’s a business problem I can’t seem to solve or a personal problem that simply won’t go away, I commit to finding the resolution to my concerns during my steps. More times than not, by the time I come indoors I have a different perspective on the problem and oftentimes concrete solutions.
One tip for problem solving while walking. Remember to have your phone or a small pad and pencil with you to write down your light-bulb moment! My experience is if I don’t write the solution down immediately, it’s lost faster than I found it!
Improved Digestion: Beth and I both suffer from sensitive tummies. Over the years we’ve both been diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (AKA: IBS.) So, any activity that claims to reduce stomach upset, then sign us up! And without a doubt, it helps. Walking is a wonderful way to reduce stomach upset by stimulating digestion and improving bowel function.
And lastly. . .
Improves our Immunity. According to Prevention magazine, research shows that moderate-intensity exercise, with walking in particular upgrades our immune system. I think I can say, like most of us, I’m still concerned with COVID and pandemics in general. Walking lowers our risk of becoming seriously ill from infectious diseases. And if we do get sick, walkers spend less time hospitalized, compared to those who don’t exercise regularly. Imagine that. . .
So. there you have it, the wonderful world of walking.
And as a friend shared with us:
When out walking, watch your step, but remember to look up and take in the glorious, expansive, beautiful, universe.
Happy walking!
Love this article. Reminders and new motivation. Thank you!
I enjoy walking and did it regularly, but it is an activity I need to get back to. Thanks for reminding me to get back to it.😊
